COL Scott Mitchell graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1991 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Armor. He began his career in the 5th Infantry Division as a tank platoon leader in 3rd Battalion, 70th Armor at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The Division reflagged as Second Armor Division and he completed his initial assignment as the Mortar Platoon Leader in 1st Battalion, 67th Armor at Fort Hood, Texas.

After completing the Armor Officer Advanced Course, COL Mitchell was assigned to 3rd Infantry Division as the 3rd Brigade Plans Officer in Vilseck, Germany. The Division reflagged as 1st Infantry Division and he took command of Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armor followed by Headquarters and Headquarter Company in the same battalion. COL Mitchell was then assigned to the Operations Group at Fort Irwin, California where he served as a company team observer controller on the Tarantula Team. He was then assigned as an exercise planner for the World Class Opposing Force as part of the Battle Command Training Program at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. COL Mitchell attended the Marine Command and Staff College, and then was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where he deployed to Afghanistan as the Executive Officer of 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry. Upon return from Afghanistan, he was assigned to 2nd Brigade (Stryker), 25th Infantry Division as the Operations Officer and later the Executive Officer of 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry. He followed up his assignment to 25th Infantry Division by an assignment in the Training and Exercise Directorate in United States Pacific Command.

In 2009, COL Mitchell assumed command of 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry attached to 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Carson, CO. He completed his second deployment to Afghanistan with the squadron in 2011 and was then assigned as a Special Assistant to the Director of the Army Staff. In 2013, he completed his tour in the Pentagon as the Deputy Director of Army Protocol. He spent the last year attending the National War College.

COL Mitchell has attended a variety of military schools to include the Armor Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, Ranger School, Infantry Mortar Platoon Leader Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Marine Command and Staff College and the National War College. He has earned Master’s Degrees in Military Studies and National Security Strategy.

COL Mitchell’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (6OLC), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab.
